Support for Ukrainian Evacuees to Calgary and Area

Calgarians are well-known for helping our community when it needs it most.  And this is one of those times.  Right now, 35,000 Ukrainian evacuees of the more than 200,000 who have fled to Canada, have chosen Calgary as home.

While our newest community members are fleeing horrendous trauma most of us have never experienced, they are overcome with appreciation, and so grateful for a safe and new place to call home.  Families, consisting mainly of a mother with children, are arriving with virtually nothing.

Their first priorities include finding temporary housing, immigration paperwork, Alberta Health Insurance numbers, banking, and getting the children set up for school.  This means simple things you and I take for granted like transportation to Service Canada, the registry, medical appointments, social agencies, food bank, school meetings, and so much more.

This is why the Rotary Club of Calgary at Stampede Park is proudly hosting a fundraiser called Ribbons for Peace.

Despite the lack of material things, the daunting paperwork, and the urgent need for temporary housing – these hurdles have not dampened spirits.  Evacuees have a keen motivation to settle, to quickly find work, and to get their children in school.

The best and most efficient way to give a hand up, as opposed to a hand out, is through financial resources.  These strong and proud people are our newest neighbours, friends, and colleagues.  They fully expect to be self-sufficient and contributing members of Alberta’s economy as soon as they possibly can.

As Past Governor of Rotary’s District 5360 Martin Parnell shares, funds raised will allow families from Ukraine to transition from their war-torn country to a new life in Canada.

Everyone deserves a chance to live in peace.

Where the Proceeds will go

Funds raised will be directed to agencies, such as those listed above, that are working to help local evacuees get settled.  We are all working collaboratively, with Rotary raising funds, and the agencies providing local on-the-ground assistance. This collaboration is an efficient and effective use of both financial resources and expertise.  We know the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.  Together we can make a very significant difference to our newest community members from the Ukraine.

Proceeds will be dedicated to essential living costs such as:

  • Medical/health tests, exams, medication not covered by AHS.
  • Housing costs that would not be covered by another agency.
  • Emergency clothing not available through donations and second-hand resources.
  • Public transportation for doctor’s visits, work appointments and interviews.
  • Expenses for care and support of children as needed, particularly as parents secure their initial job and need child care in order to work.
  • Donation of new and much-needed household and personal items.
  • Items for younger children such as diapers, blankets, and other infant/toddler supplies.
